Secondary Schools a.k.a Neighbourhood Schools
at CO@SG on: April 22, 2009, 08:38:45 PM »

I don't know, maybe it's just me but... more and more neighbourhood schools are improving with each syf, quite a number of golds, special mention to evergreen and prss, GWH.

Evergreen got Silver in the last one and now GWH. Wow.

Prss is abit... wow.. 3 golds and 2 GWH... NO Silver or Bronze at all.

What do you think?

evergreen did it too

woodgrove almost did that, and they played better imo than prss. it just depends on the day you are in. day 3 competition was super hard.

no, totally didn't mean that Smiley. theres no difference from neighbourhood or sap schools. the difference lies in the conductor imo.

you see good conductor will have good results and good pieces no matter how well or badly the academic/reputation of the school is.

alot rests with the students too. as a alumni of PRSSCO, i know that almost none of the students in the orchestra have private lessons. but they are very determined and hardworking.

Some neighbourhood schools usually have problems with students' discipline or maybe the students are not motivated enough to achieve their goals. Without discipline, practices are limited. Without practices, the quality of the music suffers. And it goes on and on.

But thankfully, unlike concert bands,  COs from neighbourhood schools have generally done better this year.

offtracking a bit, but i don't believe private lessons have anything to do with how well an orchestra plays. unless the piece requires a solo part...yea. it's the collective standard that matters.

i believe it does help.

its very obvious when a co plays to their potential with all the sound from the huqin for eg coming out rather than those schools with alot of ppl "hun" inside

I believe that having private lessons help too, since it's yin se, pai zi and yin zun and thus the members will sound more professional. However, it isn't everything. The entire orchestra playing as one is more important, in my opinion, since it's an ORCHESTRA afterall not a solo. The mo qi and togetherness of a CO will be the deciding factor.

lol? the cbs (CONCERT BANDS) better not see the last sentence. haha.

but yea, i agree with the disciplinary problem. it's hard to even ask the members to attend practice, not to say practice their instruments. it must have been really hard for the conductors to coordinate the orchestras. thumbs up (:

KIMCHI!

side track:
I was posting in the SYF day one thread about 'neighborhood school'

and I'd like to ask:

What's your definition of neighborhood school?

What's their difference from other schools?
quality of students?
confidence?
skill?
instructor?

another BIG topic I'd like to open up:

quoting:
lol? the cbs (CONCERT BANDS) better not see the last sentence. haha.

I felt a chill when i read this.
What is your school's CO's relationship with Concert Band members?
haha, I shall open up a thread on this matter open for discussion but
I'm afraid during this time every one would be too busy reading bout SYF to bother discussing about band! so maybe can advertise here first =P

EDIT:
I posted it up already,

visit this thread-

haha! it's not my school CO and Concert Band's relationship. for my school, we're on really good terms. like really good cos we spend almost every minute together. HAHA. you must be wondering why. (then continue to wonder)

but anyway, many schools have such problems. like CO vs Band. not surprising to see it what..

er only got 6. one for each section + conductress who also teach ruan

My school's band has a good relationship with us, i don't see any problem, other than a few troublemakers.. anyway regarding an earlier post, i agree that many neighbourhood schools do not have members with the right attitudes, or which, whose attitudes are worse than in sap schools etc.
