hey i'm from hcico..for those who still don't know. anyway the reason why there are so many gwhs this year is kinda because the judges are more lenient and the overall standard has improved. by alot.

no one expected temasek to get gold with honours but they did - and there's pretty much nothing you can do to change that. so it'd be best if you all let this matter die down..seriously its kind of insulting seeing how much effort they've put in.

oh and i'm from hcico and i can testify that a lot of our members dont take private lessons ._. if only they did, grrr.

well the award given is but the appearance. look beyond that, and focus the attention on your own orchestra instead, b4 looking at others...yup. =]

did u noe that tms had many inexperienced juniors that only started playing the instrument 1 yr ago? i think that they did fairly well as many had nv been to syf

central judging is not where the judges see how much a school orchestra can improve in 2 years. it's more like who is able to convey their music by touching the audience's hearts in the most memorable way.
no judge really bothers how old the kids are.

Dunman High has a very established quality control system within its orchestra. Secondary one members are not allowed to join combined rehearsals, probably to teach them humility and hone their basics. Most regular members (if not all) are required to undertake private lessons from their respective instructors. They are also expected to complete a series of individual grading examinations both in theory and practical.

The alumni, school and parental support is extremely strong. Semi-professional orchestras such as City Chinese Orchestra provide extra training for Dunman High's members.

As such, they are without much of a doubt, the most prominent secondary school orchestra locally. Of course, I believe that schools like Nanyang Girls and Catholic High are not too far behind.

Wow, our school could really learn from them.

1997 syf finals 1st Dunman
                        2nd Ngee Ann
                        3rd River Valley

1999 syf finals 1st    Dunman
                        2nd   Ngee Ann

2001 syf finals top five HwaChong, Nanyang Girls, Ngee Ann, Dunman and River Valley and Dunman won again?

and then subsequent yrs we see the introduction of GWH awards.

I've heard that Dunman only sends their best of the best players to SYF. There're either no or a few sec1 and 2 in their SYFs. So their players should have already practiced their instruments for 2-3 years before participating.

but that may not necessarily be good, in the sense that their jrs don't get to experience dazu beforehand. (:

but i think all participants in syf are the better ones in their school. =) i mean like the limit is only 80 people??!? ya...and sec1 and 2s may not be the ones which are weaker in their instrument, some may have learnt their instrument in primary school. =)

Yeah I agree with Songsim. Definitely not all HCICO members take private lessons. I joined HCICO last year without any musical background, learnt the basics from the Cellobass teacher, and despite missing many of the few HCICO sessions due to other commitment, I did put in my best effort practicing for SYF and was truly grateful that we made it (:

I don't take private lessons too. In fact, in our entire section, no one but the S1 takes private lessons Tongue

For COs, I think aside from 技术, 节奏 and 台风(感情)are also extremely important. Our conductor and teachers managed to push in the last two practically ATM, along with dedicated student conductors and other HCICO leaders... we will continue practicing hard (:

I don't understand the rest of OSS's comments about Suonas... ._.

I don't understand the rest of OSS's comments about Suonas... ._.

this is so cute. HAHA. but he basically meant that chsco didnt use a guan zi to play. they used a 大 G 唢呐 to replace the melody. and their 海笛 can be improved but then again, 海笛s aint that easy he guess?

actually i think so too.. sometimes it appears that one sounds so constipated if they dont control their embouchure properly, is that so? correct me if i'm wrong. (:

well haidi is hard to manage. gotta find a good suona and a good shaozi. minute differences causes huge disparities...just like how a millimetre difference in your gaoyinruan pin3 can cause huge disparities too! xD

well constipated...it also depends on the shaozi actually. some shaozis are too thin or just overused...very hard to control...yup =] just imagine a gaogaoyin ruan? that will be...screeching and just constipated too! heh. =X

o.O Song Sim, you sound so profound Cheesy

Anyway it's so sad that CO doesn't have a special highlight in Singapore's holistic education, unlike in "The Schools Nationals" Sad

i agree! we shld have a show showcasing SYF/NAC etc (: That'll be pretty cool. although they won't be a need for SYF showcase in that case...

Nanyang Girls' High School Chinese Orchestra

Syf 2005-Gold With Honours!
Syf 2007-Gold With Honours!
Syf 2009-Gold With Honours!

Haha yea! They should really feature the NAC finalists!
There would be good entertainment value and also... yea it'll be cool Tongue
At least those who weren't able to catch it live can actually catch NAC on TV, ahhhhh so convenient!
But too bad, there isn't such a programme (yet) Sad
