I went to watch all the CO performances today and congrats to all COs that got gold and gold with honours, you guys did great. I personally thought that the judges for this year have a special taste, they seemed to like more...happy and lively songs. Like from Chung Cheng High School(Yishun), I find it just okay actually maybe because I prefer not so, uh, lively songs and when they moved their instruments, they exceeded the time limit a lot and I thought marks will be deducted for that. So I was pretty surprised when they announced the results. Pasir Ris Secondary School did great as usual, achieving Gold with Honours again. Do continue to work hard! I was actually quite disappointed that River Valley High School did not get gold with honours, they only got gold, in my opinion, the song was great and touching that made me cry. In overall, all schools did very well and had put in their best effort! Jiayou to all chinese orchestras performing tomorrow!

I think Pasir Ris Secondary has been left out unintentionally. Unless they didn't perform their best today and could do better?

Yup! I would say that this year the standard overall actually improved! After listening to SYF since 2005, I'm quite glad to say that the overall standards have really improved tremendously. =) One of them I would say is Katong Convent. For some personal reasons I actually started listening to their playing in SYF since 2005, and batch after batch, they never failed to surprise me. I guess technically there's certainly always room for more improvements, but the improvement itself over the years is something that I feel exceptionally touching. =)
Well, I guess RV is a pity. Their choice piece is great, but the dynamics in their set piece makes me feel like I'm riding a roller coaster. (Well, on a totally random note, maybe it's the curse of the choice piece, since they got gold also when they played the same choice piece in 2005 and got gold also).
CCHS(Y) is fabulous I would really say. I really do not think it's anything particular to do with the taste. What I really feel is that what they managed to do that others don't is that they really showed us what is really called 表演. And I really see so much confidence in them that it do not feel like they are in SYF, but rather they are putting up a splendid show for all of us. It just reminds me that performance is more than just playing the right notes and playing the score correctly. It's also about 表现 and 演绎.
Well, the spirit that they displayed still sort of strike me even after so many hours. Kudos to them! =)

I only watched the afternoon session though. Mr Ng Boon Chai was the only conductor I saw to memorize his scores, it shows the amount of effort he and his orchestra have put in.
Classy display by Ho Bing Hong, and to the entire cello section for the great counter-melody.

Personally, I feel CCHYCO was the best CO for day 1. Their music not only engaging but contagious. You could see they were enjoying themselves; the melody just flowed out naturally. And they were playing music, not just plain notes. A really commendable effort for bringing a technically demanding piece to life.
As for RV, it was a pity. Their 愛詩曲 was near perfect, to me at least.

Was quite surprised that the judges gave two GWH in the afternoon session. Only expected one GWH from each session. It was obvious that CCHY ousted RV if one had to choose between them. As for PRSS and CCHM, both had their own qualities in terms of musical style. yaya, binghong really rocks, his solo. i didn't listen to the morning session but i kept on hearing ppl saying rv vry good but only achieve gold then as for pasir ris sec i just heard that their action super good the comment i heard was they move like SIAO okok, as for cchy i didn't heard much.
I don't think movement would score much points with the judges. They are, after all, reputed professors and composers, who know that there is definitely more to music than just moving. And I observed that both CCHM and PRSS had the same amount of 'movement'. GWH isn't given just because players move. It's not that simple.

Not 'movement' per se, but rather musical expression. We look out for breathing and music flow. However, exaggerated movements do not score extra marks.

yep, every SYF they invite a few orchestras to perform and they have a few combined ones. this time the SYF CO presentation is at esplanade (sounds cool, but not an ideal place for CO music at ALL /: )
