Temasek Sec's GwH reply #3
at CO@SG on: April 21, 2009, 10:58:36 PM »

Didn't go for the competition so I'm not too sure how Temasek Sec played. It's their first GwH ever and it seems to have stunned many on this forum.

How was the standard?

I wonder why Teck Whye got a bronze? I thought though they are small, but their Spring Overture sounded ok... =/

anybody have recordings?

Was temasek GWH deserving? i heard they were aiming for gold only. nowsaday seldom people play fei tian well and get gwh...

and nyg always seem to perform simpler songs very well and get gwh. they have done it the 3rd time now

temasek GWH was surprising. i heard their fei tian a few months ago and it wasn't good, but i didn't hear them on the actual day. oh well, probably good enough to get GWH. and yeah NYGH played feng nian ji, then mo li hua, now chun... all the rather common/popular ones. i think they excel because they are very detailed with their work.

the ones that left the best impressions on me for days 1 & 2 were chung cheng yishun and NYGH. chung cheng yishun's performance wasn't the strongest technically but it was VERY spirited and impactful.

so far i think the schools that were more steady and controlled did better. but still the judges are rather generous with the awards. it's almost lowering the value of the gold and GWH awards... /:

agrrreeeed, temasek said that they aimed for gold
and their fei tian wasnt quite impressive
*no offence*
ya i think day 2 only NYCO deserves it
for SURE

and ya, gold and gwh no much difference
cos gold is 80-84
gwh is >85

I think we got 85 pts on de dot? So it was quite lucky... =) I'm frm TMSCO. I'm glad we got a gold. But the future batch will have to really work harder if they want to maintain it. I was surprised RGS didn't get GWH too.

i was participating on this day! =D

anyway i thought that overall, NYGH was the most outstanding one.
they really put their heart and soul to play the music, and i thought that was the main thing to enjoy it. that was really something cool! 4th gwh in the running! :O

I thought the rest were quite okay and they did well too! Cheesy
the gold with honours award are all the ones expected to have, exept for temasek gosh that was quite surprising, (which shows they have put in their best)!

JIAYOU ALL COs WORLDWIDE, and <3 the music forever okay!:D

no i dont think chun was a simple song actually! its just the work they have put in to make it sound smooth and easy. seriously.
and the pieces that an orchestra play does not equate to the award, so many good orchs can play fei tian and all get gwh!

I've listened to most schools in the morning session yesterday, felt that most had trouble with the set piece. I believe that perhaps the judges could have taken the set piece as one of the main judging criterion since most schools performed their choice pieces relatively well. I reckon somewhat a bellcurve system present?

I must say Temasek CO did pretty well for the set piece, choice piece (fei tian) was probably good enough. In my opinion, it could have been of a low GWH standard?

However, if you were to ask me whichever CO deserves the GWH or not, I must say I'd respect the decision of the judges.

i agree with that...we played better than marsiling sec in front of us, marsiling sec's suona was so off tune. whats more, our bass drum was missing...don't ask me why we didnt notice, but why it wasnt there might be  because marsiling sec wheeled it in, but im not too sure about that either.

I could say for this year, the expectation was quite low. Many schools got gold with honours and a lot got gold. I thought they should be more strict in future to find out the best COs.

i think chun is very difficult with all the different layers and emotions. technical-wise it's not easy either. emotion-wise... it's quite hard 'cos singapore has no spring for us to experience.

so, yah.

the previous syf, we played molihua which is not at all simple- it's very detailed and delicate.

the syf @ 05, i didn't participate so i can't say much. but feng nian ji definitely isn't what i'd call simple.

but i'm glad you thought it's simple, because that was what we wanted it to sound- simple even though it has a certain level of difficulty. (:

we put in a lot of effort in trying to sound that way and apparently we succeeeded (:

THANKS FOR YOUR COMPLIMENT! Grin

yeahh. precisely. their guanyue was out off tune by a lot at one part(no offence though)......but i guess their overall effect was good which let them get gold lors.
