the suona players for hcco are commendable for their efforts, but i know for a fact that vjco also has many instruments with students who only just learnt them prior to the competition, so they are too commendable. anyhow, good job to all orchestras! (:

Yeah everyone worked hard la.

The spotlight shouldn't be solely on us (HCCO suonas), though. There were other amazing people who worked very hard in HCCO. There were other instrumental switches other than the erhu/zhongruan/pipa to suona, like pipa to zhongruan, liuqin to zhongruan, dizi to gaosheng, no background to zhongsheng etc. (:

I LOVE HCCO.

For 江南好 which team's rendition do you like best and why?

On another note,I think DHSCO suona and percussion esp suona were very impressive.very clean,i seldom hear suonas that can play together and sound very clean.the cello n basses did well too with their strong control of dynamics in the beginning of 老天爷下甘雨.

This is what i meant by talking about music rendition,as well as structure of the music which also ties in with dynamics range and expression. Smiley

HCCO's arrangement of 江南好 was very outstanding probably thanks to conductor,
they might not have the best players and the most experience but the arrangement plays such a big part i was able to ignore many flaws~

and about DHSCO's percussion being clean?! nahhh haha.
got mess up one whole part and i saw accidents too! hehe.
drop sticks ah =X
the suona solo was cool but the blending in with the orchestra after the solo was nicer!

lol i should think that when irina mentioned clean, she was referring to the suonas. and yes, dhsco's suona, especially the solo, was indeed impressive!

I'm back!
was very busy and maybe forgot alot of things i want to mention (good thing!)

since you guys are JC ppl,
more mature den Sec school right! can take harsher words hehe.

Let's start a lil with dunman and what I rmb bout them.

Yup if think I did not rmb wrongly Dunman had a small negligible accident,
drop 'diao cha stick' [lucky the stick thin and light drop no sound xP]

Haha its cool they arranged for the three drums + three gong song to become 8 花盆鼓 plus 4 cha i think? haha

the percussion actions wise for dhs choice piece is planned nicely but seems like everyone trying their very best to put up a show in the end alot diff pose haha! den end up got one part really messed up =(
[ but its okay! not easy to coordinate eight person who stand at different levels in percussion skills]

I think everyone must not forget the meaning of the song when you're playing.
When i think of 西北组曲-老天爷下甘雨's beginning my mind pictures a bunch of thin tanned farmers working hard under the sun. (Its funny but I dunno why)
the spirit is kinda like fighting on in very hard times although you about to die liddat =X
not a bunch of Fit guys fighting a war haha.
and the ending is sorta like relieve from hard times.
not winning the war and taking all the enemies' posession xP

I dunno.. maybe I'm totally wrong haha. its personal taste
but of course they did amazingly musically
definitely got talents among the players.
oops i forgot: If I'm not wrong near ending 三弦 that part i think got instru obvious zao sia! mentioning it cos its rare among  弹拨 to zao sia luh~ (nvr notice clearly but suspect its yangqin!)
not important la! small accident haha.

Overall its not bout how many accidents happened in the performance
cos every CO must had tried their  VERY VERY best to avoid them
(of course some obviously did'nt and countless accidents happen to them - not talking bout JCs =P) Its about the awesome chinese music right?

Oh one more thing bout the JC SYF!
There's alot of fresh placing arrangement I saw =)
cool experimenting
Dunman had their Er hu on the right of the stage and bass on the left right?
that way the Er hu 音筒 faces the audience!
how do you guys feel bout that?
was it louder?
but did it affect 音色? made it sound rougher?

I hope I did'nt offend people in the prev post just seem like the thread is dying so I add on some "constructive crap" i call it.
Experienced orchestra should be able to take harder words
but new orchestras should get more compliments!
so come on guys! stop posting common sensical stuffs and bring some real comments =D
that way we all improve!

the smallest CO deserve commendation too. shen guo qing did brilliantly to get gold for his CO

WAH SEH! 乱云飞 was my fave for some time too!
I play it on repeat mode for hourss can(彭修文's version of course)

here goess my thoughts:
1. I noticed ACJC had quite little members, not easy leh!
2. the song's feeling is difficult to express. cos its not the usual CO da zu song its 京剧 mah! Since all are JC kids its not easy to put that type of 京剧 style into them quickly.

check out the original =P
might be funny to you!
so long ago those type 爱国song mah

3. super hard to make JC aged people like 京剧 and spend their precious experience in SYF playing it! haha. so rrly got to respect shen lao shi to make this brave choice bah!

The song is actually about:

People dying from thirst, praying and praying for rain that never comes.
The percussion part is actually part of a ritual where they people pray for rain, all the way until the end of the suona solo.
Rain finally comes after that and the people celebrate happily.
Nearing the end of the song, the people quieten down to 感恩.

Yeah la quite like your interpretation haha. But I don't understand what you mean about the enemy thingy leh :S

Yar, I think kinmchi's interpretation of our song was somewhat different. The suona soloist is Daniel Lim. And to add on to pokpokgei, the solo was meant to be crying out to the gods for the rain to come, followed by the happiness that comes when the rains do come. The ending is, as pokpokgei said, a prayer of thanks.

Anyway, half of the percussion people were made up of other students who only learnt percussion prior to the competition. Hence, even though it may be rather messy, their efforts deserved to be acknowledged. (:

Yep i meant DHSCO suona sounded clean the percussion on the whole had good presentation as well although yes, they did drop the drum stick. On the whole musicality of 老天爷下甘雨 was good with balanced dynamics.however,i guess their 江南好suonas tended to be a tad overpowering almost turning the piece into woodwinds highlight instead of the litheness of the Jiangnan region. But i guess minor flaws that do not affect the pieces directly doesnt really affect their score???

老天爷下甘雨:percussion opening seems to suggest the dry parched earth of the yellow highlands in Shaanxi.then gradually with celli, basses n suonas suggest also the dreariness of the farmers toiling(perhaps futile attempts) beneath the hot sun.there is a suona solo akin to 信天游?
After the 'Hei zo' chanting session there is a still lull with occasional tinkle chimes n guzheng;which could suggest the breath of wind stirring a little.suspense before the rain...then of course with the crescendo of timpani and the whole orchestra coming in,it sounds like the rain is finally pouring nourishing the earth for cultivation...

Hi firstly, I think that the new arrangement was a result of analysing the balance between both the cellos and the xian yue. Cos dunman high has lesser students participating compared to other schools so the xian yue lacks people. That resulted in the shift in arrangement, to create a balance in the overall sound effect.

Secondly, your interpretation of the song 西北 is hmm abit off.  西北 expresses the longing desire for rain of the natives, hmm i don't think DHSCO sounded like they were fighting a war?!?! The long bars of sustained notes by cellos at the start represents the searing heat waves and the sweltering heat. Eventually the music builds up with the chanting and percussion towards the suona solo, where the prayer comes in. the suona solo portrays the natives' sincere call for rain, while the entrance of the timpani signals thunder. the 广板 represents the rejoice of the natives, celebrating rainfall. Towards the end, the humming and the sheng solo represents the heartfelt gratitude of the natives towards the heavens for bringing down rain. So its a song with deep meanings.

Haha i never read the song description before.

but i just made up all that crap from reading the song name lol.

the main idea i was trying to say is
to produce that kinda PEK CEK feeling.
it more of sounded and looked very energetic though.

get what I mean?
same for NYJC,
pplayed 老鼠娶亲 very well but like lost the meaning of the song..
again sounded more like 老虎杀人! HAHAHAHA.

oh btw my friend says he some how knows 4 of the percussionist from dunman
and say where got just learn before syf haha.
oh but can tell some learn more recent than others la.
cos some very funny 手法 and everyone play diff style liddat.

'looked and sounded energetic'? i beg to differ. at the front part, only the cellos and the percussion made significant movement. if you were refering to the percussion looking 'energetic', i sincerely do not think so. they were just hitting the drums? if they were energetic they would have been jumping around.

the 'pek cek' part comes in after the cellos, and guanyue and xianyue comes in with a somewhat ear-piercing tune with not much melody. this part is where the farmers are being 'pek cek' as you put it.

i should think that you need to watch the whole performance again, with the scenarios we have now described, for you to better understand what we're trying to put across. (:
