Sheng H3 Research Paper
at CO@SG on: October 16, 2009, 06:45:27 PM »

Hey guys recently I just completed my A levels H3 music paper which constituted of me doing a paper on a research topic. I chose the sheng and, well, I want to share this stuff with anyone who's interested in sheng. It's kinda big though, 49 pges long so can't email, will have to upload through a temporary link.

So here's asking. Anyone interested?

Ohkay here's the link:
http://www.yousendit.com/download/Z01PYnUrUzdFc0pFQlE9PQ

Credit where used, that's all I'm asking.

A few things:
The entire paper includes recordings. If you want them, let me know and if I have the time, I'll put them up. Can't guarantee this now though because I do have to take A levels this year, studying and yadayada. The recording of Loo Sze Wang playing Princess Wencheng is the one on youtube though.

The link lasts for seven days, or a hundred downloads. (I just found out that I can attach stuff here so if the link doesn't work just use this thing here)

Interviews have been cut significantly because of time constraints (editing), needed to make them more understandable. The ones included here are short, but I have the ones that I translated myself in full without the help of my teacher. Those aren't as easy to read as the ones included here but they have a lot more content, 30 pages solid in all. If you're up to it and want to read let me know.

Guo Chang Suo and Yang Jiwei have requested that their recordings of the interviews are not to be shared (they weren't supposed to be conducted as formal interviews on the spot) but Wuwei has allowed me to share his. This one is really big though, 300 megabytes, and you'll probably have to meet me in person to get it.

That's all for now, happy reading, and let me know what you think!

Hm, wasn't easy but I love the topic so you could say I enjoyed almost every single bit of it Cheesy

The 42 is a very brand specific type of model... currently I believe only one brand, zhaohongliang makes those. The models I mentioned are more the "commonly accepted" types which see production across different brands. One defining factor as to how much they are used are the kinds of repertoire that are written for the sheng (especially this instrument because what notes you can play is so heavily dependent on the model). So far only about two composers are actively composing for the 42... They'd be Liu Wen Jing and Fung Haiyun who's currently strongly promoting the 42. I'm sure there are many composers in China who have also written for it but their works have not reached Singapore...
